Four thieves arrested after an encounter in connection with the theft of cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees in Mahoba

Kanpur: Mahoba police arrested four men following an encounter on Monday night in connection with a robbery at a locked house in Officers’ Colony on Aug 2, in which cash and jewellery worth several lakhs were stolen.The arrested accused are Yasin (21), Waris (21), Naim (20) and a 16-year-old minor boy.During interrogation, the accused allegedly revealed that they had carried out the robbery with two other associates, identified as Abhi Rajput and Vipin Rajput, who are currently absconding.SP Shashank Singh said police received a tip-off that the suspects had gathered near a culvert on Patha Road and were dividing the stolen property among themselves. Acting on the information, a joint team led by Kotwali in-charge Manish Kumar Pandey and surveillance cell in-charge Shivpratap Singh laid a trap and surrounded them.According to the SP, the suspects opened fire when they were cornered, prompting police to return fire in self-defence.Yasin and Waris sustained bullet injuries to their legs during the exchange of fire and were admitted to the district hospital for treatment, police said.Investigators said the accused had already melted and sold part of the stolen jewellery. They were allegedly planning another theft while dividing the remaining cash and valuables.Police recovered Rs 18,500 in cash, gold and silver ornaments, two mobile phones, two country-made pistols and five cartridges from their possession.Police teams are conducting raids to trace Abhi and Vipin, who are allegedly involved in the robbery.
