Bengaluru: RTOs across Karnataka booked 3,756 cases against private bus operators and seized 33 vehicles during a five-day enforcement drive against overcharging and other violations.The transport department had received several complaints about private operators charging exorbitant fares during the Ganesha Chaturthi season. In one instance, passengers were reportedly charged Rs 7,000 for travelling from Bengaluru to Hubballi.Between Sept 11 and 15, RTO officials inspected 14,987 private buses, including inter-state services. Cases were booked for violations including permit rules, charging excess fares and tax evasion. Officials collected Rs 73.6 lakh, including Rs 40.3 lakh in penalties.MP Omkareshwari, additional commissioner for transport (enforcement, South & Bengaluru Urban), said the drive was launched following complaints from the public. “During document verification and inspections, officials found several violations and took action accordingly. Complaints received from the public have been forwarded to the respective registering authorities for further action.”Officials also found operators violating rules while transporting passengers’ luggage.Overcharging by private bus operators during festive seasons has become a recurring issue, with passengers, particularly those travelling during weekends and holidays, often complaining of steep fares.
