Udupi: Three men were arrested shortly after robbing a 69-year-old woman of her gold chain in Shankarapura, Kaup taluk, Saturday. Shirva Police also recovered the jewellery and the motorcycle used in the crime.SP Hariram Shankar said the complainant, Helen D’Souza of Kurkalu village, was making jasmine garlands in her house backyard with a friend around 9.30am when Anand, a former tenant, arrived with two others asking about a rental room. After speaking with her and having tea, she told them there were no rooms available. The trio then went to her sister Theresa’s house nearby.
Around 9.45am, one of the accused returned, asking for her mobile number, saying he would contact her if he needed a room. While she was giving the number, he grabbed her neck and snatched her 28g gold chain worth about Rs 3.5 lakh. When Helen tried to resist and scream, Theresa heard her and intervened. The trio pushed Theresa aside and fled on a motorcycle.Shirva Police registered a case under Section 309(4) read with 3(5) of BNS.Police examined CCTV footage showing the men arriving and escaping on the motorcycle. Alerts with CCTV clips were circulated to all district check posts. Acting on the alert, Byndoor Police intercepted the suspects at the Shiroor check post within 3–4 hours and handed them over to Shirva Police. The stolen chain and the motorcycle were recovered.The accused are Anand alias Hasan Saab Aminagad, 49, of Joida; and Kiran Dharmaraj Godimani, 19, and Shashidhar, 19, of Haliyal taluk in Uttara Kannada district.The operation was led by Kaup CPI Ajmath Ali, Shirva Police Station Inspector Manjunath Marabada, Byndoor PSI Sunil Kumar and other staff.
