Kanpur: The Fisheries Department on Friday detained three committee members who were found fishing in the Yamuna river near Hirapur village in Jalaun, despite a restriction imposed by the government on fishing from June 1 to Aug 30.The raid was led by deputy director of fisheries Girishchandra Tripathi, accompanied by department officials and police personnel. Each year, the govt enforces a total ban on fishing in rivers and ponds from June 1 to August 30 to safeguard fish during the breeding season. However, several contractor committees ignore these directives and engage in illegal fishing, harming fish stocks as well as govt revenue. The arrested individuals have been identified as Bankhandi, Ashish and Kamal Singh.Fishing nets were also seized from them. During the operation, some other individuals on the boat managed to flee.Tripathi said a detailed report would be sent to the directorate against the committee for breaching contract conditions by fishing during the restricted period. He added that a proposal would be sent to blacklist the committee and said the drive against illegal fishing would continue, with strict action to be taken against offenders in future.
