COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police have served externment orders to 29 habitual offenders to curb crime. City police commissioner N Kannan issued the orders, directing them to remain away from the city for the next six months. They will not be allowed to enter the city for the next six months.
A police official said personnel from various police stations had been instructed to compile details of repeat offenders and submit reports to senior officers. Based on these reports, 29 people were identified for externment.Police summoned them, explained the order under Section 51A of the Madras City Police Act and issued copies of the orders on Saturday.Police sources said on Jan 13 last year, 27 people were issued externment orders for the first time in the city. The orders were issued by the then commissioner, A Saravana Sundar. In April, 83 people were externed. So far, 184 people have been issued externment orders under Section 51A of the Act.Police said the invocation of Section 51A has helped reduce the crime rate over the past year.
