Police arrested an accused in the shooting of a youth in Kothi Kaist village in Etawah

Etawah: Police arrested a 25-year-old man following an encounter early Sunday in connection with the firing incident that left a 19-year-old youth injured during a dispute in the Jaswantnagar area of Etawah on Saturday night.The encounter took place in Kothi Kaist village under the Jaswantnagar police station limits.According to police, a tip-off was received that two of the accused were hiding in bushes near a canal bridge close to the Kachaura Bypass railway overbridge. Acting on the information, a police team reached the spot and launched a search operation.Police said that when they attempted to apprehend the suspects, the duo allegedly opened fire on the team. The police retaliated, injuring one of the accused in the leg.The injured accused, identified as Abhishek alias Banjara (25), sustained a bullet injury to his right leg and was arrested. His accomplice, Sumit alias Lakha, however, managed to flee under the cover of darkness.Police recovered a .315-bore country-made pistol, two live cartridges and one empty cartridge from the arrested accused.Station House Officer (SHO) Kamal Kumar Bhati said a fresh case has been registered against the accused in connection with the encounter and under relevant provisions of the Arms Act.According to police, several criminal cases, including those related to attempt to murder, assault, criminal intimidation and Arms Act violations, are already registered against the accused with the Jaswantnagar and Basrehar police stations.The accused was admitted to a hospital for treatment, while efforts are underway to arrest the absconding co-accused, police said.
