Nagpur: The biggest electoral roll verification exercise in nearly 24 years will begin across Maharashtra on Tuesday, with nearly 2 crore electors across Vidarbha — about one-fifth of the state’s electorate — set to come under Special Intensive Revision (SIR), first such exercise since 2002. In Nagpur district alone, 4,610 booth level officers (BLOs) will undertake door-to-door verification of 46.38 lakh electors across 12 assembly constituencies over the next month.The Election Commission’s SIR will continue till July 29, during which BLOs will distribute and collect Enumeration Forms from every household. The exercise aims to ensure that every eligible voter is included while ineligible entries, including duplicate, shifted and deceased electors, are identified and removed after due verification.Across Vidarbha’s 11 districts, the drive will cover 2,00,41,024 electors, making the region one of the largest focus areas of the statewide revision. Besides Nagpur, the exercise will cover 25.45 lakh electors in Amravati, 22.53 lakh in Yavatmal, 20.89 lakh in Buldhana, 17.97 lakh in Chandrapur, 15.95 lakh in Akola, 11.37 lakh in Wardha, 11.23 lakh in Gondia, 10.19 lakh in Washim, 10.10 lakh in Bhandara and 8.28 lakh in Gadchiroli.The rollout follows the completion of the pre-SIR mapping exercise, during which Nagpur mapped nearly 70% of its 46.38 lakh electors. The exercise also flagged 8.75 lakh elector records — about 27% of those mapped — with anomalies that will now be physically verified and rectified during the revision.Deputy district election officer Rachna Indurkar said every elector will receive two copies of the Enumeration Form during the house visits. “BLOs will distribute the forms during the one-month exercise. If the completed form is available during the visit, it will be collected immediately. Otherwise, BLOs have been instructed to make up to three visits to ensure every household gets an opportunity to submit the completed forms,” she said.Appealing to citizens to cooperate, Indurkar said electors should keep the required documents ready and provide accurate information. “The objective is to ensure that no eligible voter is left out. Electors can also submit the Enumeration Form online through the Election Commission’s portal. Once the form is successfully submitted, an acknowledgement will be generated, completing the process digitally,” she said.After completion of the field verification, draft electoral roll will be published on Aug 5, following which electors can file claims and objections till Sept 4. Election officials will conduct hearings and dispose of all claims and objections by Oct 3, after which final electoral roll will be published on Oct 7.
