COIMBATORE: Around 2,300 idols of Lord Ganesh have been immersed in waterbodies in Coimbatore city and in rural regions in the last three days since Wednesday.Around 300 idols installed by various right-wing organisations were immersed in the Kumaraswamy lake in the city. Hindu Munnani members, who installed 164 idols, made their procession from Theppakulam Street near Flower Market and reached the Kumaraswamy lake. Similarly, Hindu Makkal Katchi, Bharath Sena and other right-wing organisations immersed idols installed at various locations in the city.The city police deployed 2,200 police personnel, including 200 from Rapid Action Force (RAF), as part of the security measures for the celebrations and immersions of idols. Police installed CCTV cameras and monitored the processions.In the jurisdiction of the Coimbatore rural police, more than 1,600 idols were immersed in various tanks and rivers. A total of 38 processions by various organisations were conducted for the immersion of Ganesh idols at Mettupalayam, Pollachi, Karamadai, Annur, Sulur, Perur, Anaimalai and Alandurai on Wednesday and Thursday. Police deployed 1,528 personnel for the safety of processions and immersions of Ganesh idols.Meanwhile, a clash broke out between two groups of youths during a Ganesh idol immersion procession near the Karungalpalayam turmeric market in Erode on Friday. Hindu Munnani and local residents carried out processions with over a hundred vehicles carrying idols towards the Cauvery river for immersion. As the procession reached the turmeric market area in Karungalpalayam, a heated argument between two groups of youths quickly escalated into physical violence. The groups indiscriminately attacked each other on the open road, resulting in severe injuries to several individuals involved.Upon receiving information, police personnel rushed to the scene. Seeing the approaching police force, the rioters fled the spot. Police collected the footage and began investigations.
