Mumbai: Govt Railway Police (GRP) at CSMT have registered an FIR after an animal welfare activist complained of inhumane and cruel transport of birds through cages on the Geetanjali Express. Nearly 2,100 budgerigars—commonly called budgies or parakeets—were transported in seven cages on the train. Around six to seven of the birds lost consciousness.According to the complaint, the birds were transported on the Howrah-Mumbai Gitanjali Express and were supposed to reach CSMT at 10.45 pm on Sept 7. But the train was delayed and reached CSMT at 2 am on Sept 8. The birds had been crammed into seven cages in the parcel coach. Around 2,100 birds had been crammed into seven cages. They couldn’t move or fly and there was insufficient air, food and water for them. They were transported in this manner for 32 hours and there was no caretaker with them.An FIR was then registered by the GRP.
