Mumbai: Western Railway (WR) will convert 16 existing 12-car suburban services into 15-car trains from March 19, coinciding with Gudi Padwa, to boost capacity and ease crowding on its network. The move will increase the number of 15-car services from 211 to 227, while the total suburban services will remain unchanged at 1,414.Officials said the conversion of 12-car rakes into 15-car trains will enhance carrying capacity by nearly 20%, providing relief to commuters on the busy Churchgate–Virar–Dahanu Road corridor. Of the 16 upgraded services, eight will run during peak hours—four each in the morning and evening rush.WR chief public relations officer Vineet Abhishek said the step is part of ongoing efforts to reduce overcrowding and improve commuter convenience amid rising passenger demand.Western Railway has been focusing on increasing capacity alongside infrastructure upgrades to manage growing suburban traffic, with the latest augmentation expected to provide additional relief to daily passengers on Mumbai’s lifeline.
