Kanpur: Police detained 12 persons near a liquor shop at Ramadevi Chauraha in Chakeri area on Tuesday night after finding them drinking in public amid complaints of liquor being sold beyond the permitted 10pm closing time.The action followed complaints that English and country liquor was being sold late night at higher prices at shops located near Chakeri police station.ADCP East Shiva Singh conducted an inspection of Ramadevi Chauraha and found people drinking alcohol in the open and alerted senior police officers. A police team subsequently reached the spot and detained 12 people. The detained persons were taken to the police station and questioned for around an hour. Police took action against them under Section 34 and later released them.ADCP Shiva Singh said the police campaign against drinking in public places would continue and strict action would be taken against those violating law and order or creating nuisance. She added that an inquiry was underway to ascertain who was facilitating the late-night sale of liquor at Ramadevi Chauraha.
