Silchar: Assam Rifles and DRI seized counterfeit cigarettes worth Rs 59.2 lakh in Cachar on Saturday.Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team launched searches at suspected locations and intercepted a truck carrying the consignment, an Assam Rifles official based in Srikona said. One person was arrested, and the truck was impounded.Preliminary investigation indicated that counterfeit cigarettes of foreign origin were being transported through the Tarapur area of Silchar to other states for black-market distribution.The accused, along with the seized cigarettes and vehicle, was handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for further legal action and investigation into the wider smuggling network.Officials said Assam Rifles and DRI intensified vigil along key transit routes to curb the flow of illegal goods across state borders.
