Silchar: Newly elected BJP Rajya Sabha member Sushmita Dev was accorded a grand welcome in Silchar on Saturday.It was Dev’s first visit to her hometown after quitting Trinamool Congress and joining BJP. Hundreds of party workers gathered at the BJP district headquarters, waving saffron flags, beating drums and raising slogans as she arrived.Addressing workers, Dev said she left TMC without any personal condition or expectation. She added that PM Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah showed faith in her by allowing her to return to the Rajya Sabha, calling it a matter of “great pride and privilege”. She said she would work sincerely to justify the party leadership’s confidence.Dev said her responsibilities would not be confined to West Bengal and that she would work for Assam, especially the Barak Valley, focusing on development, public welfare and regional issues.Assam minister and senior BJP leader Kaushik Rai said Dev’s entry would boost the party in the Barak Valley. “Sushmita Dev’s decision to join BJP reflects the growing faith of senior leaders in the development vision of PM Narendra Modi and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Her organisational experience will strengthen the party at the grassroots,” Rai added.Dev, daughter of former Union minister Santosh Mohan Dev, was earlier with Congress and represented Silchar in the Lok Sabha. She joined the TMC in 2021 and was elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal before recently switching to the BJP.
