NEW DELHI: A dispute between a couple over a routine household chore allegedly spiralled into a violent confrontation at their home in Delhi’s Nihal Vihar on Friday, leaving 31-year-old software engineer Vinay Gupta dead and four of his wife’s relatives detained.Gupta, who worked as a software engineer with Adobe in Noida, was allegedly assaulted after his wife Rekha called her family following an argument between the couple. Police are probing the circumstances leading to the assault and the role of each of the four people detained in the case.
How the dispute unfolded
According to Gupta’s family, the argument began over who would apply medicine to blisters on one of the couple’s four-month-old children. Rekha allegedly refused to do it and asked Vinay to take care of it.The couple, who had been married for around three-and-a-half years, have four-month-old twins, a boy and a girl.Gupta’s sister Kirti told TOI that Rekha left the house following the argument and returned around 10 minutes later with her brothers and other relatives.Police said the dispute between the couple had started on Friday morning and that Rekha subsequently called her family members, who reached Gupta’s residence in Nihal Vihar.
Family alleges brutal assault
Gupta’s father Premchand said he initially believed the relatives had arrived to discuss the matrimonial dispute.He said he took them upstairs and offered them water. According to him, the situation turned violent when Vinay arrived and the relatives allegedly attacked him.Gupta’s mother Renu alleged that she and her husband tried to intervene but were pushed aside.Kirti alleged that the accused hit Vinay and strangled him, claiming that some of them sat on his chest while assaulting him.The family has also alleged that Vinay’s brothers-in-law had threatened him in the past.Police have not yet established the exact sequence of the assault and are questioning those detained.
What happened after the assault
Vinay suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he was declared brought dead.His family has alleged that the assault was deliberate and pre-planned, but police are investigating the circumstances and have not confirmed those allegations.CCTV footage has also surfaced showing a car arriving at the house with the alleged assailants.Another portion of the footage shows an injured man being brought out of the house and made to sit on a chair.
Four detained, murder case being registered
Police have identified and detained four people in connection with the case: Vinay’s wife Rekha, her brothers Raju Jindal and Ved Prakash Jindal, and Raju’s wife Poonam.A case under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to murder and common intention, is being registered.Police are questioning the four detained persons to ascertain their alleged roles in the assault and are investigating what led to the confrontation.
