Pune: The Pune Zilla Parishad has begun inspections of foodgrains, pulses and nutrition meals served at Anganwadis across the district following concerns raised by an Anganwadi worker over poor food quality.The worker was issued a termination notice after a social media reel showing inferior quality of food supplies went viral, triggering widespread opposition. Her termination was subsequently revoked.The inspection, which began on Monday, was to be completed on Thursday. Officials were expected to assess the quality of meals and compliance with prescribed norms, with action promised against those found violating guidelines.There are 4395 anganwadis in rural Pune where such an inspection is being undertaken. “Almost 90% of the inspections are finished. However, there are some anganwadis in villages, very remote and difficult to reach. Hence, the staff has asked for a few days of extension. By the end of next week, the report will be in,” said Anand Khandagle, who heads the women and child development department at the Pune Zilla Parishad.The team conducting the checks includes an extension officer, a child development project officer and Anganwadi supervisors. Each supervisor has 20-25 anganwadis under her, with some of them holding charge of more than one cluster. “I myself have visited 22 anganwadi centres till now,” Khandagle said.Khandagle further said they are also planning to exchange dry peas with green peas in the menu. “Most of the pulses need to be soaked overnight and then cooked the next morning. These materials are stored for almost two months in the anganwadis, so hygienic storage of food grains, pulses, spices etc is very important. Wherever the inspection team found issues or wherever the anganwadi workers complained to the team, we have asked the contractor to exchange the material immediately. Once the report is in, we will see what action needs to be taken as per law,” said Khandagle.
