Mysuru: A lovelorn youth from Mandya district tried to immolate himself and allegedly set a diploma engineering student on fire near a college in Mysuru on Tuesday. The youth and the girl, who suffered burns, are hospitalised.According to Vijayanagar police, the girl, a second-year engineering student, is said to be out of danger but under treatment while the accused boy has suffered severe burns and is battling for life at KR Hospital in Mysuru. The boy worked in an agricultural field at his native to eke out a living.Police said Chandan, 26, of Halaguru village in Malavalli taluk, Mandya district, doused himself with petrol and torched himself while asking the girl to love him and then attempted to hug her. The girl, however, set herself free but sustained burn injuries, police said.Chandan intercepted the girl while she came out of a community hostel, where she stays, in Vijayanagar police limits. He insisted that she accept his love and immolated himself before hugging her. However, the public who rushed to help the girl doused the fire, but by then the youth was severely injured.Police said the incident happened around 10.15 am.Police said both the boy and the girl are from the same village and belong to the same community. The girl completed her pre-university education in Bengaluru and joined a diploma engineering course in Mysuru.According to sources, the boy has suffered more than 60% burns while the girl sustained minor injuries and is out of danger.Vijayanagar police have taken up a case against Chandan on charges of attempting suicide and attempted murder.
