Kendrapada: A 19-year-old college student was electrocuted and three others seriously injured after a DJ vehicle carrying a sound system came in contact with a live high-voltage power line during a Ganesh idol immersion procession at Jayakrushnapur village under Nikirai police station in Kendrapada district on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Nikhili Behura, a Plus II Arts student at Birupa College, Indupur.Police sources said several youths were carrying a giant idol of Lord Ganesh for immersion when the DJ vehicle encountered the overhead high-voltage wire. The deceased and injured accidentally came in contact with the live current and suffered severe electric burns. Locals rushed the victims to district headquarters hospital, Kendrapada, where doctors declared Nikhili dead.As the condition of the three injured persons is serious, they were referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, said IIC, Nikirai police station, Bimal Kumar Mallick. Police seized the body and sent it to the hospital for an autopsy.The police officer said the authorities have banned the use of DJ music during festivals and idol immersion processions to curb noise pollution and prevent traffic disruptions on major roads. However, the organisers allegedly violated the restriction by using a DJ during the immersion procession. Police have registered a case against the DJ owner and members of the puja committee, he added.
