Silchar: The body of 24-year-old Souvik Sarkar, who drowned while trying to rescue a friend in the Kalain river in Cachar district, was recovered near Gumra on Wednesday morning — four days after the tragic incident, reports BB Goswami. Police and local sources confirmed that Souvik’s body was spotted floating in the river at Gumra. A resident of FCI Godown area in Badarpur, he had gone missing on Sunday afternoon after jumping into the river in a bid to save his friend, Bishal Ghosh. The tragedy unfolded on Sunday when seven friends from Badarpur and Bhanga visited the stone quarry by the Kalain river near Sindura for a swim, taking advantage of the weekend holiday. While bathing, Bishal was caught in a strong current and began drifting away. Souvik rushed to help but was also swept away.The remaining five friends managed to bring Bishal ashore, but he succumbed soon after. Despite multiple search efforts by the SDRF, Souvik could not be found until Wednesday morning, when locals spotted a body near Gumra and notified authorities. It was later identified as Souvik’s. His body was sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
