Kanpur: World Rhinoceros Day was celebrated near the rhino enclosure at Kanpur Zoo under the guidance of forest conservator/director Dr Kanhaiya Patel.Kanpur Zoo has developed a thriving multi-generation rhino population from a single pair introduced in the 1970s, with animals born there transferred to leading zoos across India and Japan.Female Mayank Kumari arrived in 1973 and male Lakshit in 1974. The population later included Maanu, Pawan, Krishna and Harsh. In early 2025, Gauri, a 15-month-old female calf, was moved to Vantara Zoo in Gujarat.Rhinos from Kanpur have also been relocated to zoos in Lucknow, Patna, Junagadh, Gujarat and Hyderabad.
