Rourkela: Tension prevailed in Kalunga area here on Monday following the death of a worker in an accident at Gotidhara stone quarry under Kalunga police outpost here. The incident triggered outrage among villagers, who accused the quarry management of gross negligence and demanded strict action against those responsible along with Rs 50 lakh compensation for the deceased worker’s family.According to sources, a boulder fell on the head of a labourer, Harman Aind (55), as stone extraction and transportation work was underway at quarry no. 3 on Monday. Aind, who sustained critical injuries, was rushed to Rourkela Government Hospital where doctor declared him dead.As news of the incident spread, a large number of villagers gathered at the quarry site and staged a protest, alleging that the accident took place due to the absence of proper safety measures at the quarry.Police officials of Kalinga police outpost reached there. After long discussion, compensation was finalised that Rs 12 lakh. “We have registered a case of negligence against the quarry management,” said S Dehury, sub-inspector, Kalunga police outpost.
