NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday stepped up his attack on leader of opposition in Tamil Nadu assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin over his alleged remarks on a female actor, saying the law would take its course if women were insulted.“Women are the main reason behind my political victory. I will not tolerate any abusive language against women. There can be harsh political criticism, but there should not be any defamatory remarks against women,” Vijay said without taking Udhayanidhi’s name in his address in the assembly.

The development comes days after Udhayanidhi was arrested and later released on station bail in connection with a case over allegedly obscene remarks about a female actor.The controversy erupted during a Cauvery protest in Thanjavur when supporters chanted actor’s name as Udhayanidhi Stalin was speaking. He paused, smirked and made a remark that critics interpreted as a vulgar reference to the actor. Stalin Jr later denied making any objectionable comment, saying he was referring only to the Cauvery issue.Police arrested Udhayanidhi at his Chennai residence on August 4 and took him to Thanjavur for questioning before releasing him on station bail. He accused the Vijay government of political vendetta and maintained that he had no intention of insulting women.Without naming Udhayanidhi, Vijay also took a swipe at political leaders who make comments that cross the line.
