Varanasi: Amid heavy footfall of devotees during Navratri, the UP govt has taken an initiative to promote women empowerment by deploying women conductors on special buses operated for pilgrims. The UPSRTC has introduced women conductors on select ‘Puja Special’ buses, particularly those operating on routes to Vindhyachal. UPSRTC regional manager Parshuram Pandey said that under Mission Shakti initiative, 10 women conductors have been deployed on buses heading to Vindhyachal, while a total of 40 women conductors are currently working across the Varanasi region. He said that the move not only promotes self-reliance and responsibility among women but also sends a strong message of empowerment during the festival dedicated to Goddess Durga.Officials said the presence of women conductors has also enhanced the sense of safety and comfort among passengers, especially women travellers. To manage the surge in passenger traffic during Navratri, UPSRTC has significantly increased the number of buses on the route. While around 21 buses operate on normal days, the number has been raised to 86 during the festival, including 65 additional buses. These services are being operated from all eight depots of the Varanasi region to ensure smooth and convenient travel for devotees.
