Thiruvananthapuram: Decomposed body of a 80-year-old woman was found inside her estate quarters in Kulathupuzha, nearly four days after her death, with police alleging that her son neither informed relatives nor neighbours and instead continued performing rituals inside the house.The deceased, Chinnathamma, was found lying on a cot in a bedroom of Quarter in RPL 2F Colony at Koovakkad on Friday evening. Police said the body had begun decomposing and suspect the woman had died three to four days earlier. Exact cause of death, however, will be known only after postmortem report is received.According to police, the incident came to light after Chinnathamma’s granddaughter, who lives in Kasaragod, visited the house to hand over Aadhaar and other documents sought by her father, Krishnaswami, 55, for processing his retirement benefits.

When she asked about her grandmother, Krishnaswami allegedly told her that the elderly woman had died three days earlier and was lying inside the bedroom. She entered the room and found the body covered with a blanket before alerting neighbours and police.Locals told police that Krishnaswami had not disclosed his mother’s death to anyone in the colony. They alleged that he had continued performing puja and other rituals inside the house while keeping the body there. Neighbours also said he rarely interacted with people in the locality.A police team reached the spot, completed inquest proceedings and shifted the body to Govt Medical College Hospital, Parippally, for postmortem. Body was later handed over to relatives.Police have registered a case under Section 194 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Officers said Krishnaswami has not been taken into custody but is being questioned. Police said he is under observation as they suspect he may have mental health issues, though they are yet to verify his medical history or establish whether he had been undergoing treatment.
