Coimbatore: A woman and her son were arrested on Wednesday, for murdering her husband following a family dispute on Monday.The arrested have been identified as Poongodi, 43, and her son Arunkumar, 21, of Rooba Nagar in Sundakkamuthur.The deceased, Vijayakumar, 46, a banana leaf trader, was initially believed to have died under suspicious circumstances. Poongodi, told the police that her husband, who was addicted to alcohol, returned home drunk on the night of April 13 and collapsed.Perur police recovered the body and sent it to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for a postmortem. A case of suspicious death was registered. However, the postmortem report revealed compression marks on the neck and a fractured hyoid bone, indicating strangulation.Police then altered the case to murder and intensified the investigation. During questioning, Poongodi and Arunkumar confessed to murdering Vijayakumar. They said Vijayakumar while intoxicated, accused his wife and elder son of having an illicit relationship.Enraged by the allegation, Arunkumar pinned his father against a wall by the throat, while Poongodi joined in the assault. Vijayakumar was strangled to death during the altercation.Based on the confession and forensic evidence, police booked the two for murder. Both have since been remanded in judicial custody.
