Gurgaon: A cyber harassment case was registered after a woman alleged that an unknown person created a fake Facebook profile using photographs of her and her teenage daughter and uploaded obscene and defamatory content, causing psychological distress to them and harm to their reputation. According to police, the complaint was first received through the national cyber crime reporting portal on Dec 29, 2025. It was entered in the ministry of home affairs complaint register and later converted into a formal FIR after preliminary verification. The FIR was registered on Tuesday.The accused allegedly took screenshots from the woman’s lifestyle and cooking videos posted on social media and reposted them with derogatory Bengali captions and sexually explicit messages, police said. The fake account, created under the name “Raju MD”, was allegedly used to monitor her public posts and extract images of both the woman and her daughter. These images were then shared with offensive captions and false claims. The minor’s photographs were also circulated through another account along with objectionable videos, allegedly to misrepresent the victims and harm their reputation.The complainant, a Gurgaon resident who works as a house help, said the harassment increased after she posted a video confronting the alleged perpetrator. She claimed that more objectionable material was uploaded thereafter, including images involving her daughter. “It feels like a deliberate attempt to damage our reputation among relatives and neighbours. My daughter is deeply disturbed by what is being shared online,” she told TOI. She added that despite reporting the matter, the fake profile remained active.In her complaint, the woman stated that the harassment may be linked to a financial dispute related to an informal savings group. She alleged that a former acquaintance had suggested a marriage proposal for her daughter to settle a debt, which she refused.Police sources said preliminary digital evidence suggests the accused may be operating from Itahar in West Bengal. Verification is under way. The case has been assigned to a cyber crime team, which will examine technical evidence, identify the person behind the fake account and coordinate with social media platforms to remove the content, officials said.Further, police reiterated that impersonation, creation of fake profiles and sharing obscene or defamatory material online are punishable offences. They advised citizens to report cyber crimes through official channels for prompt action.
