In a landmark ruling, the Begusarai court has imposed life sentences on Rani Kumari and her accomplice, Mohd Sajjad, for the chilling murder of Rani’s husband, Maheshwar Rai. The couple was convicted of strangling Rai in their rural home in Fafaut village back in January 2024.

Begusarai: A subdivisional court at Manjhaul in Begusarai on Thursday sentenced Rani Kumari and her paramour Mohd Sajjad to life imprisonment for the murder of Rani’s husband, Maheshwar Rai. The court also imposed a fine of Rs20,000 on each of the convicts.Additional public prosecutor Rakesh Kumar said additional district and sessions judge Sanjay Kumar Singh had held the duo guilty on March 25, while the order on the quantum of sentence was delivered on Thursday.The case dates back to Jan 2024, when Maheshwar Rai was allegedly strangled to death at Fafaut village under Khodabandpur police station area of Begusarai district. The complaint was lodged by the victim’s father, Ram Pravesh Rai, who accused his daughter-in-law Rani Kumari of murdering his son with the help of Mohd Sajjad.Maheshwar Rai and Sajjad were residents of Narhan village under Bibhutipur police station area in Samastipur district, while Rani Kumari hailed from Fafaut village in Begusarai.
