In a robust response to flooding concerns, the Bihar government has earmarked a staggering Rs 1,117 crore for 384 flood protection initiatives throughout the state. Among these, Rs 340 crore is dedicated to five pivotal schemes, including crucial anti-erosion strategies and a protective ring bund for AIIMS Darbhanga.

Patna: The state govt will spend Rs 1,117 crore on 384 flood protection schemes in Bihar, water resources department minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary said on Thursday. He said the decision was taken and the amount to be spent was approved during the 66th meeting of the Bihar State Flood Control Council (BSFCC) held in Patna. Choudhary is also the chairman of the BSFCC.The council held detailed discussions regarding five specific schemes. A total of Rs 340 crore will be spent on these five schemes, which include four of an anti-erosion nature, while one involves the construction of a ring bund to protect the AIIMS Darbhanga from waterlogging.The water resources department (WRD) minister directed the engineers concerned to monitor all embankments in the state and submit reports. He said all the schemes are scheduled to be completed prior to the 2026 flood season.Addressing the meeting, Choudhary emphasised the need to ensure proper monitoring of all embankments across the state. He directed engineers to personally inspect the sites and submit relevant reports to the department. He also asked them to coordinate with the local administration to ensure the expeditious completion of necessary repair works in all vulnerable areas.Principal secretary of WRD Santosh Kumar Mall, as well as representatives from the planning and development department, finance department, revenue and land reforms department, disaster management department and the Ganga Flood Control Commission, attended the meeting.
