Madhubani: A Jhanjharpur trial court on Thursday sentenced a woman and her paramour to death for the murder of her two minor children, describing the crime as falling under the “rarest of rare” category. District and additional sessions judge Abhishek Ranjan pronounced the sentence in a case registered at Ghonghardiha police station.According to the prosecution, the children’s father, Pramod Kumar Safi, lodged an FIR on July 10, 2023, alleging his wife, Anita Devi, and Jay Shankar Mandal had murdered their four-year-old son, Prince Kumar, and their 18-month-old daughter, Srishti Kumari. The prosecution said the children were killed by twisting their necks before their bodies were thrown into a river. The boy’s body was recovered the same day, while the girl’s body was found two days later.The prosecution further told the court that locals witnessed the two accused throwing the bodies into the river and caught them at the spot before handing them over to the police. Both have remained in judicial custody since then.The court convicted both under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, awarding the death penalty and imposing a fine of Rs 50,000 each. The fine will be paid to the victims’ family. They were also sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 each for destroying evidence.
