Chennai: Unable to endure the abuse by her drunk husband, a 57-year-old woman murdered him and kept the body inside her house for several days before dumping it in a sewer near her residence in Anna Nagar East on Thursday. On noticing the decomposed body in the sewer near the ‘O’ Block, Anna Nagar East late on Thursday night, locals alerted the police. Officers recovered the body and estimated the man’s age between 55 and 60 years. The body was shifted to Kilpauk govt Medical College Hospital for postmortem. A breakthrough came when investigators analysed CCTV footage from the neighbourhood, which showed a woman dragging a heavy bag towards the sewer on the night of March 5. Based on the footage, police identified the woman as Ambika, 57, of Annai Sathya Nagar.During interrogation, she told investigators that she killed her husband, Santhanam, 60, as she could no longer endure his physical harassment whenever he got drunk.

The man worked as a security guard in Nungambakkam and the couple was married for five years and lived in a rented house in the locality.Police said Santhanam was a habitual drinker who frequently assaulted his wife. Last week he returned home drunk and began arguing with Ambika. During the quarrel, she stabbed him with a kitchen knife, killing him. The Anna Nagar police registered a case of murder and destruction of evidence. Ambika was produced before a magistrate court on Saturday and remanded in judicial custody.
