Nagpur: A 34-year-old woman labourer died of suspected heatstroke earlier this week after working for long hours under the scorching sun in Kamptee. Nagpur, and the region as whole, is currently experiencing severe heat conditions. The incident occurred on Sunday when as per observations at the surface observatory at Sonegaon, the mercury hovered around 40 degrees Celsius. The deceased, identified as Dulari Dilip Verma from Nagpur, was engaged in brickwork at an under-construction site near Yashodhara Lawn on Ghorpad Road under the New Kamptee police station limits. According to reports, she worked throughout the day under intense heat. In the evening, she started complaining of restlessness and discomfort. Dulari was rushed to the sub-district hospital at Kamptee, where she died around 8pm on Sunday. Doctors on duty declared her dead, with heatstroke cited as the primary cause. The incident has triggered fresh concerns over labour safety and working conditions during peak summer, especially for daily wage workers exposed to extreme temperatures. INTUC Nagpur district president Nafis Shaikh alleged that workers across sectors are being neglected. “Has the heatwave planning of the district administration and Nagpur Municipal Corporation failed? “Industrial workers deployed by multiple agencies and agricultural labourers are getting neither drinking water nor shade,” he said.
