Jhansi: A 44-year-old woman was killed and her husband injured after a wall of their decades-old house collapsed amid incessant rain in the congested Bisati Bazaar area under Kotwali police station on Monday morning.The deceased, Saroj Hayaran (44), was inside the house with her husband Mukesh (48) when the rear wall suddenly gave way. The couple was sitting close to the wall and was trapped under the debris.Residents of the locality rushed to the spot after hearing the sound of the collapse and alerted the police. A team of police personnel and fire department officials launched a rescue operation and pulled the couple out from beneath the rubble.The two were rushed to hospital, where doctors declared Saroj dead. Mukesh, who suffered injuries in the incident, was admitted for treatment.The collapsed wall was reportedly very old and built with thin bricks dating back to the British era. Continuous rain in the city had further weakened the structure.SP City Preety Singh said they are assessing other old and vulnerable houses in the locality to prevent similar incidents.
