Bengaluru: A woman escaped with minor injuries when a wild elephant, looking for drinking water, suddenly stormed into the midst of tourists at Sangama, the scenic confluence of Arkavathi and Cauvery rivers in Bengaluru South district Friday afternoon. Sangama, a popular picnic spot for city people, is located around 100 km from Bengaluru.A video of the incident shows the tusker rushing towards the river and tourists screaming and running helter-skelter. A middle-aged woman failed to notice the elephant as she was facing the opposite direction. Before she could realise, the elephant pushed her aisde with its trunk and moved forward. “Fortunately, the woman sustained minor injuries. If the elephant had tramped her or hit her with its trunk, she would have sustained serious injuries,” sources said. The woman was taken to a local govt hospital where she was treated.There were more than 100 tourists, including women and children, when the tusker appeared. Many of them who an away left behind their lunch boxes, water bottles and packed clothes on the riverbank.“The elephant, surprised by the crowd, dashed away with its trunk held upwards and tail curled, towards the jungle on the opposite bank. There, it stood for nearly 20 minutes before vanishing into the jungle,” sources said, adding, “The tusker came to drink water, but it was a rare incident as elephants do not visit this particular place, frequented as it by tourists.”
