Times News NetworkKanpur: A 24-year-old woman, the daughter of a lawyer, committed suicide by hanging in the Kalyanpur police station area of the city on Saturday.The incident came to light when her parents returned home in the evening and found her body hanging from a noose in a room. Family members accused a young man of harassing and tormenting her. Police and a forensic team reached the spot, began an investigation and sent the body for post-mortem examination.Chandra Prakash Singh, a resident of Purana Shivli Road, said his daughter, Ekta Singh, was pursuing an M. Lib course. He said that on Saturday he went to the court as usual, while his wife, Laxmi Singh, went to the market to buy medicines. Ekta was alone at home.According to family members, a friend called Ekta in the afternoon and the two spoke at length. Around 3 O’ Clock, the friend called the father to ask when he would reach home, as Ekta’s phone was going unanswered. The friend later called the parents multiple times.When the family reached home at around 6 in the evening, the main gate was locked from inside. After knocking for a long time and getting no response, a young man from the neighbourhood was sent over the wall to get inside. After the gate was opened, the family entered the house and found Ekta hanging from the ceiling fan. Police were immediately informed.Police and the forensic team conducted an investigation at the scene. Police took the student’s mobile phone into custody and began an inquiry. During questioning, it emerged that a young man allegedly continuously harassed the student, due to which she remained under mental stress.Inspector Santosh Kumar Singh said, “The family has submitted a written complaint accusing a young man of harassment. After investigating the matter, necessary action will be taken.”
