Ahmedabad: A digital smart lock on the main door was supposed to keep intruders out of the locker, but it couldn’t protect a firecracker businessman and his family from a betrayal within. By coaxing her young nieces to reveal the code to the lock, a 27-year-old woman bypassed high-tech security to pull off a seamless Rs 50 lakh jewel heist in her own brother-in-law’s flat.When the 36-year-old businessman took his family out for dinner on Sunday evening, he left behind a flat secured by a Delta K-1 smart lock. But when they returned at 10.30pm, their bedroom cupboard was gaping open, and gold and cash worth Rs 50 lakh had vanished.Yet, there were no jemmied frames, no shattered glass, and no signs of forced entry. The untouched keypad gave Isanpur police their first critical break: whoever picked the flat clean knew the code.

A forensic team, fingerprint experts, and dog squad joined the probe, but the investigation quickly turned inward, Isanpur inspector B S Jadeja said. Police zeroed in on the 27-year-old woman, who lived in the very same apartment complex. Under interrogation, she confessed to orchestrating the heist to clear a Rs 14 lakh loan that her mother owed to a finance company.She did not need any high-tech tool to defeat the digital lock. She simply coaxed the combination out of her young nieces during casual conversations. Knowing exactly where the cupboard keys were stashed, she waited for the family to leave for dinner, punched in the passcode, and walked out with a fortune.She then handed the bag containing the valuables to a male friend at Lal Darwaza before the two went to Law Garden. Following her confession, police recovered the entire cache of stolen jewellery along with the getaway scooter.
