The 22-year-old came in early after a top-order wobble and showed amazing calmness. He hit boundaries at key times and kept the innings going even as wickets fell at the other end. He won the Player of the Match award for his aggressive strokeplay and calm decision-making during his knock.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Connolly admitted to feeling pre-match nerves but saw them as a positive sign. “I woke up in the morning with a little bit of nerves, which I was really happy about, but yeah, I was really looking forward to getting out there and playing my part the best, I can,” he said.

He credited head coach Ricky Ponting for helping him stay composed. “Ponting just kept me calm and collected. He told me to play my game and dominate,” Connolly revealed, adding that the team’s strong bowling effort made the chase easier.

Connolly also spoke about the opportunity to learn from captain Shreyas Iyer. “I was looking forward to spending time out in the middle with him. He’s a world-class player. I’ve played a little bit of cricket with him for Australia A and Australia. He is a great player for a reason, and hopefully I can learn as much as I can,” he said.

Reflecting on his journey, the young all-rounder highlighted the influence of Shaun Marsh, a former Punjab Kings great.

“Shaun Marsh was the first person I spoke to about it and he gave me some good words. Growing up, I played at Western Australia with him for a long period of time and he has always been good to me. I looked up to him as a mentor and an idol and really enjoyed spending some time with him” Connolly shared.

His first innings not only gave Punjab a big win, but it also showed that a new star player had arrived in the IPL. With high confidence and momentum on his side, Connolly will be eager to build on this performance as the tournament progresses.
