Mumbai: Minal Patel, the widow of Dhrumil Patel, who died in Feb after a car driven by a minor in Vidyavihar collided with his scooter, petitioned Bombay high court to seek cancellation of bail that the sessions court granted on March 4 to the driver’s father. The car was driven by a 17-year-old, said an FIR registered at Tilak Nagar police station, which has also made the teen’s father, in whose name the car was registered, an accused. The 32-year-old woman, a teacher by profession, through her advocate Ruben Mascarhenas, contendedshe was one of the two victims of the offence and said her late husband, Dhrumil, was a young entrepreneur and only 33 years old when he died after the collision. On Feb 5, 2026, the couple were heading back to Ghatkopar from Parel, where Dhrumil worked, on his scooter when a car from the opposite direction “violently struck them”, she said in the plea. Dhrumil sustained grievous head injuries, rib fractures and fractures to his left knee and right wrist, while she too broke her right hand and sustained grievous injuries to her right eye and other parts, her plea added. Her petition said the trial court erred in failing to observe that an offer of Rs 40 lakh to her by the accused’s family indicates an attempt to allegedly influence course of the case.It also said the sessions judge has failed to appreciate that under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, the natural guardian or the owner of the vehicle is deemed to be guilty of the offences committed by the minor. There is overwhelming evidence in favour of a strong prima facie case that “Master X was in the habit of driving rashly, negligently and dangerously while performing various stunts with the car on the road,” the plea contended. It will be heard in due course.
