Hyderabad: Widespread rainfall over the past few days has improved Telangana‘s monsoon performance, with the state’s overall rainfall deficit reducing from 18% to 9%, according to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS). As of June 29, the state has received 113 mm of cumulative rainfall against the normal 124.6 mm, bringing the overall monsoon status into the normal category.Several districts recorded substantial rainfall, with Mulugu leading the state at 204.4 mm, followed by Bhadradri Kothagudem (151.1 mm), Kumuram Bheem (150.7 mm), Rangareddy (141.3 mm) and Nirmal (139 mm). Nalgonda (126.5 mm) and Jagtial (105.5 mm) also received widespread showers over the past few days, helping improve the state’s rainfall figures. Five districts are currently in the excess rainfall category.Rangareddy and Nalgonda have recorded a 51% surplus, followed by Suryapet (32%), Nagarkurnool (27%) and Khammam (24%). Eleven districts, including Hyderabad, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Mulugu and Mahabubnagar, are in the normal rainfall category. Despite the improvement, rainfall remains uneven across Telangana. “Fifteen districts continue to face deficient rainfall, including Adilabad (-32%), Nizamabad (-35%), Medchal-Malkajgiri (-39%), Siddipet (-50%) and Warangal (-57%). Hanumakonda remains the only district in the large deficient category, with a 72% shortfall, having received just 37.5 mm against the normal 134.7 mm,” said Y V Rama Rao, senior meteorologist from TGDPS.Hyderabad, which had earlier recorded excess rainfall this season, has slipped back into the normal category after missing the recent spells. The city has received 103 mm of rainfall against the normal 104.4 mm, leaving it with a marginal 1% deficit.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam districts over the next 24 hours.“Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also likely across all districts of Telangana. For Hyderabad, generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain or thundershowers, are expected with intense spells at one or two places towards the night. The city’s maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 31°C and 22°C, respectively,” said an official from IMD.
