The move is aimed at gradually phasing out the current practice of delivering pensions at beneficiaries’ doorsteps

T’puram: The finance department has given in-principle approval for the disbursal of pensions exclusively through the direct benefit transfer (DBT) mode for social security and welfare fund board pension beneficiaries. The move, facilitated through an order issued on July 27, is aimed at gradually phasing out the current practice of delivering pensions at beneficiaries’ doorsteps. The state govt expects the new system to improve transparency, efficiency and accountability in pension distribution while ensuring that the amount reaches beneficiaries directly through their bank accounts. However, the finance department is yet to take a final decision on the date from which the DBT-only system will be fully implemented across the state. The transition will begin only after completing the required technical preparations and updating the bank account details of all eligible beneficiaries.Officials said the shift to DBT would be carried out in phases to ensure a smooth transition without disrupting pension payments. Govt is expected to issue detailed operational guidelines before the new mechanism comes into force. On the other hand, there will be no change in the welfare pension distribution system this month. Pension payments will continue under the existing arrangement, with beneficiaries receiving the amount either directly into their bank accounts or through doorstep delivery by cooperative bank employees, as is currently being followed.
