Gurgaon: Health department has made arrangements at all city hospitals to handle emergency cases during Holi, as doctors expect a rise in skin, eye and respiratory complaints during the festival.Ophthalmologists have been deployed in emergency wards at several hospitals to attend to patients with eye irritation and related problems. Experts said people with pre-existing lung conditions are particularly vulnerable to respiratory issues due to exposure to synthetic colours containing toxic chemicals. The department has directed Sector 10 Civil Hospital and sub-divisional hospitals to ensure round-the-clock availability of doctors.“A dedicated team has been deployed at the civil hospital. Ambulances will remain on standby for emergency cases on Holi (Wednesday). All doctors have been instructed to stay on alert,” said Dr Manish Rathi, deputy medical officer at Sector 10 Civil Hospital.Doctors also advised residents to take precautions related to diet and lifestyle during the festive period. Dr Satish Koul, senior director, internal medicine at Fortis, said irregular meal timings, increased intake of fried food, sweets and alcohol during festivals can strain the digestive system, especially among people with conditions such as diabetes and fatty liver. He recommended maintaining regular meal timings, avoiding skipping meals, staying hydrated, and including fibre-rich foods, fruits, curd and probiotics in the diet. He also advised moderation in portion sizes, adequate sleep and light physical activity to support digestion and metabolism.“If someone experiences persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain or unusual fatigue after celebrations, they should seek medical advice promptly,” he said.Doctors further recommended using natural colours and wearing dust masks to protect respiratory health. Hospitals report a spike in breathing-related complaints during and after Holi every year.
