Amritsar: The family of Kirandeep Kaur, a 24-year-old from Tarn Taran district of Punjab who was stabbed to death at her home in London on the morning of July 12, has appealed for help to bring her body back to India for her final rites.Folding his hands before those arriving to offer condolences at their native village, Piddi, Kirandeep’s brother Gurvinder Singh said the family is unfamiliar with procedures and lacks the financial means to bring her home. “My sister was stabbed five times in the stomach. We don’t know anyone there, and right now, we just desperately need her body back,” Gurvinder said, appealing to NGOs, philanthropists and the Centre for assistance. Kirandeep had moved to the UK in Sept 2024 on a student visa, settling in the Hayes area of London. To fund her dreams and pay the Rs 25 lakh required for her education, her family — who were already financially vulnerable — sold half an acre of agricultural land, their only major asset. She had recently secured a work permit and was scheduled to officially receive her degree this Sept, bringing hope to her parents and four siblings. She also leaves behind a newborn baby just a few months old. Her mother Baljeet Kaur expressed deep grief and anger over the sudden and violent loss. “We send our children abroad thinking they will be safe, but there is hooliganism there too,” she said. A 44-year-old suspect, Daniel Sean James of Pinner, has been arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a bladed article.
