Chandrapur: The sudden green discolouration of water in Amalnala dam has triggered concern among residents of Gadchandur and surrounding areas, with the quality of water supplied for drinking purposes now under scrutiny. The dam has been a source of drinking water for Gadchandur, a town with a population of around 50,000, since 2022. The change in colour has raised questions over the safety of the water being supplied to residents.According to officials, the water had turned green in a similar manner around seven years ago. At the time, however, the dam water was primarily used for irrigation and by local industries. With the dam now serving as a drinking water source, the latest development has assumed greater significance.Questions have been raised over whether discolouration is due to algal growth or chemical contamination and whether the water poses any health risk. Samples from the dam have been collected and sent for lab testing. Exact cause of the discolouration and safety of the water will be known after the lab report is received.
