Hyderabad: With temperatures gradually rising, bookings for water tankers began to surge across the city, signalling the early onset of summer stress.Almost 50,000 water tankers had been booked by Feb 16, averaging around 3,000 per day. In comparison, around 70,000 tankers were booked in Jan, averaging 2,200 per day. This increase in just over two weeks of Feb indicated a steady rise in demand, as groundwater levels began to dip and household consumption increased.Officials expect these numbers to increase further in March, when the peak summer season begins and borewells in several areas start producing less water. However, authorities pointed out that the situation was better than last year.“Tanker demand has fallen by almost 20% compared to the same period last year, primarily due to good rainfall and the increased installation of rainwater harvesting systems in residential areas,” said an HMWSSB official.
