Hassan: With mercury levels in Hassan expected to soar further until April 22, the region is facing an intense and dry heatwave, with water sources drying up in the Malnad region.According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature is predicted to hover around 40-41 degrees Celsius till Sunday. Some villages, particularly those in Channarayapatna and Belur taluks, may face drinking water shortage. In view of that, deputy commissioner K S Latha Kumari has directed the authorities concerned to take necessary measures to ensure sufficient supply of drinking water and protect the welfare of the people. The soaring heat has already hampered agricultural activities with crops such as coconut, coffee and areca drying up. Residents have been advised to avoid direct exposure to the sun, particularly in the afternoon, and always stay hydrated. The DC has directed district officials to identify wards where there is a shortage of drinking water and suggested that private tankers and borewells be used to supply water. The DC also directed officials to create enough awareness among people to stay healthy. Usually, the Malnad region of Hassan district receives heavy pre-monsoon showers. However, this season, there has been no rain so far, particularly in Sakleshpura and Belur taluks. Bharat from Sakleshpura taluk said he used to get natural water for his house earlier, but this time, there is a shortage. “If the rains are delayed for another week, the natural source of water will dry up, and we don’t have any alternative source to draw water from,” he said.
