Patna: Bihar director general of police (DGP) Vinay Kumar has proceeded on a 21-day leave from Tuesday, prompting the state govt to assign the additional charge of the top police post to senior IPS officer Preeta Verma.The home department issued a notification on Tuesday evening appointing Verma, a 1991-batch Bihar cadre officer, as acting DGP during Kumar’s absence. Verma currently serves as director general of home guards and fire services and will continue to hold the post along with the additional responsibility of DGP.According to the department, Kumar’s leave was sanctioned from Sept 15 to Oct 5 due to unavoidable personal and health reasons. Verma will oversee the functioning of police headquarters and discharge the key responsibilities attached to the DGP’s post during this period.Kumar will resume charge after his leave ends, while Verma’s additional responsibility will cease upon his return.The arrangement comes as the state police administration continues its regular functioning under the temporary leadership of Verma, who is among the senior-most IPS officers in the Bihar cadre.
