Mandya: Tension prevailed at K Bettahalli village in Pandavapura taluk on Monday night after police denied permission to use DJ music during a Ganesha idol immersion procession, prompting villagers to stage a protest on the Mysuru-Channarayapatna highway.The villagers had installed the Ganesha idol earlier in the day after obtaining permission from the police. However, when preparations began for the immersion procession in the evening, the organisers planned to use DJ music. Police officials intervened and informed them that the use of DJ music was prohibited as part of the restrictions imposed during religious processions.Agitated over the decision, a group of local youths placed the Ganesha idol in the middle of the highway and staged a protest. The incident disrupted vehicular movement on the busy stretch, resulting in traffic congestion and tension in the area.The protesters insisted that they be allowed to proceed with the immersion procession with DJ music, stating that they had obtained prior permission to install the idol. The situation remained tense for some time as police attempted to convince the villagers to comply with the restrictions. After discussions with the protesters and amid growing resentment among the villagers, the situation was brought under control. The procession was subsequently allowed to proceed, with the participants carrying the idol for immersion amid music and celebrations.Meanwhile, a mass immersion of 108 Ganesha idols will be held in Maddur on Wednesday, with a procession planned through the main roads of the town. The event is expected to draw nearly 10,000 devotees and participants. The mass immersion will cover Ganesha idols installed at various locations across Maddur. The procession will follow the same route used last year.During 2025, the Ganesha procession witnessed stone-pelting and led to clashes and tension in the town.With a large turnout expected, arrangements are being made to ensure smooth conduct of the procession and immersion.
