Pune: The state govt on Wednesday appointed Vijay Suryawanshi, divisional commissioner of the Konkan division, as the new municipal commissioner of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).The post of PCMC chief had been vacant since Oct last year after the then commissioner, Shekhar Singh, was transferred as commissioner of the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority. Since then, Shravan Hardikar, MD of Maha Metro, had been holding additional charge of the civic body.Suryawanshi is a 2006-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre. He currently holds the rank of additional chief secretary and has previously served as the additional metropolitan commissioner of MMRDA, municipal commissioner of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, and district collector of Raigad and Gondia.There had been demands from newly elected representatives of PCMC as well as activists for the appointment of a full-time commissioner, as Hardikar, who was holding additional charge, frequently had to travel to Nagpur and other cities for work related to Maha Metro.
