CCTV footage from a wedding in Jammu city in Indian-administered Kashmir shows a man firing a gun at former chief minister Farooq Abdullah. Abdullah escaped unhurt after the attack, which took place on Wednesday evening.
Police told the BBC the suspect – identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal – is in custody and the matter is under investigation.
A five-time chief minister of Indian-administered Kashmir, Abdullah is also the president of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, a prominent regional political party.
His son, Omar Abdullah, who is the current chief minister, shared this in a social media post:
“Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get within point-blank range and discharge a shot.”
He also questioned how someone was able to get this close to his father, who has Z+ security – among the highest security levels in the country.
