Video grab of the clash inside Chandaka police station

Bhubaneswar: A video showing a clash between members of a family over a property dispute inside Chandaka police station has gone viral on Tuesday. The incident, which took place on Saturday night, has sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning how violence unfolded within the premises of a police station. Police, however, maintained there was some pushing and shoving inside the station and the situation was quickly brought under control. Two separate cases were registered and 13 people from both sides were arrested. “The investigation is still underway,” a police officer said.“The footage clearly shows two rival groups of one family brawling in front of police officers, exposing serious lapses in law enforcement. Blood stains were visible inside the station after the fight. We suspect the groups used sharp-edged weapons,” Chakradhar Mohanty, a local resident, said.Police, however, denied allegations. Officials said the dispute stemmed from an ongoing quarrel over ancestral property. On Saturday night, one injured man, accompanied by his wife, arrived at Chandaka police station to lodge a complaint. Later, rival family members also reached the station, triggering a fight. “None of them carried weapons. One person was already injured when he came in, which explains the blood stains,” the officer added.According to police sources, the property dispute had been simmering for several years between the children of two women, both married to the same man in Daruthenga under Chandaka police station limits. “They often quarrelled inside their house and police had intervened in the matter on earlier occasions. This time, however, the brawl escalated,” a neighbour, requesting anonymity, said.Police said that those arrested included the man, his two wives, their two sons and relatives from both sides. Following the rejection of their bail pleas, all were remanded to judicial custody.
