Kota: A former sarpanch of Umar Gram Panchayat was killed Saturday after an SUV carrying Congress MLA Suresh Gurjar – representing Khanpur constituency in Jhalawar district – hit his bike on National Highway 52 under Hindoli police station of Bundi district. Gurjar was reportedly travelling from Jaipur to Jhalawar with a driver at the time of the accident. The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Babu Mohan Meena, a resident of Umer village in Bundi and the sarpanch of Umar Gram Panchayat in 1991.According to circle inspector Hament Gautam, the accident took place around 12pm Saturday, when the SUV coming from Jaipur hit Meena’s bike as it was turning onto the highway from a link road. “The collision was so severe that the SUV suffered damage to its front portion, the bike was crushed flat and the legs of its rider were severed from the body. He was declared dead at a hospital,” he said.After hearing about the mishap, Meena’s kin and people from nearby areas congregated on the spot and interrupted traffic, expressing anger over the tragedy and demanding action against the driver.Senior police and administrative officials, including Hindoli sub-divisional magistrate Shivraj Meena and deputy superintendent of police Ajit Meghwanshi, reached the spot soon after the incident and managed to placate the angry crowd. MLA Gurjar assured those present of action in the matter and assistance to the family of the deceased, before leaving for Jhalawar. The highway was cleared after these assurances and the body was sent to a local mortuary, from where it was released to the deceased’s family after a post mortem. A case has been lodged against the driver of the MLA’s vehicle and further investigations are underway.
