Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, the Vatican’s envoy to India and Nepal, made history with his first visit to Meghalaya’s Garo Hills. Welcomed by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the Apostolic Nuncio took part in a concelebrated Mass and prayed at the graves of former bishops.

Shillong: Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, the Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, arrived in Tura on Saturday on a two-day visitHe is the first Vatican ambassador to visit the Garo Hills region of Christian-majority Meghalaya.CM Conrad K Sangma, who received the Pope’s ambassador, said he was honoured to warmly welcome Archbishop Girelli, the Ambassador of the Holy Father, to Don Bosco in Mendal, North Garo Hills district.“His gracious presence is a true blessing for our community and his words of spiritual wisdom is an inspiration to the church and all its endeavours in the region and the state,” the CM expressed through his social media handle.The Nuncio’s itinerary included a concelebrated Mass at the Cathedral on Saturday evening, attended by clergy from across the region. He also visited the graves of past Bishops where he offered special prayers.The Vatican ambassador was accorded a public reception at Sacred Heart Church, Chandmari, Tura, after which he witnessed an indigenous cultural programme at the Sacred Heart Shrine.On Sunday, a Pontifical Mass will be celebrated at 9.30 am at the Sacred Heart Shrine Gate at Tura, which is expected to be attended by innumerous of the Catholic faithful.
